The first event questions the role of the planner and of planning in the socio-ecological transition through the example of the ambitious experiment Lysbüchel Süd in Basel.

On a former logistics site, the Stiftung Habitat acquired in 2013 a plot of land of more than one hectare to develop an urban project that integrates several housing cooperatives around a common space, each of which leases its land to the foundation and develops its own architectural project. Tanja Herdt, who managed the project for Metron AG, will present the principles, difficulties and promises of this project, which is currently under construction. Her presentation will be followed by a debate with Lex Faber on the possibilities, challenges and obstacles of socio-ecological urbanism.

Debate moderated by Philippe Nathan, founding architect of 2001.

Within the framework of the conference cycle "Common Ground".

Tanja Herdt

Architect, Professor at TU-Delft

Tanja Herdt is an Associate Professor of Theory and Methods of Urban Design in the Department of Urbanism at TU-Delft. She is both an academic and a practicing urban designer with an emphasis on urban transformation, methods of urban analysis, and history and theory of the city. Tanja’s work links theories and methods from architectural history and anthropology to investigate questions of equality, power, ecology, and social change in the built environment. Tanja received her doctorate from the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich, where she also worked as head of research for sustainable settlement design at the research centre ETH-CASE. In her work she focuses on theories and methods that uncover the dependencies of social practices and urban form, the future design of housing and public space, and the influence of digitalization on city design. Her work on Cedric Price was published under the title The City and the Architecture of Change at Park Books.
