What the Flag?! in Luxembourg

Dans le cadre de l'European Design Festival, qui aura lieu au Luxembourg en 2023, le Cercle Cité, en collaboration avec Greylight Projects (Heerlen, NL), propose une exposition hors-les-murs intitulée What the Flag? ! in Luxembourg.
Les drapeaux, œuvres d'artistes et de designers luxembourgeois invités, sont mélangés aux drapeaux d'artistes existants, qui font partie des archives du projet What the Flag? ! présenté dans la ville de Heerlen et dans les institutions culturelles de l'Eurégion (DE, BE, NL) depuis 2021.
Les artistes et designers sont invités à réagir à partir de leur propre travail et de leur vision du médium « drapeau » dans le contexte du lieu dans lequel ils sont exposés. Ils sont invités à remettre en question le drapeau non seulement d'un point de vue formel mais aussi conceptuel, en transposant et en réévaluant leur pratique sur ce support spécifique et dans l'espace public.
Les drapeaux sont placés entre les lieux centraux du European Design Festival 2023 dans la Ville de Luxembourg (Casino Luxembourg – Forum d'art contemporain, Rotondes, Cercle Cité, Schluechthaus, luca – Luxembourg Center for Architecture) formant un parcours que le public peut suivre à l'aide d'une carte, disponible à l'accueil de l'espace d'exposition Ratskeller à partir du 15 mai.
Le projet What the Flag? ! initie un échange artistique et créatif au-delà des frontières et son édition luxembourgeoise voit le projet se transposer sur une nouvelle ville passionnante dans le cadre d'un festival européen.

BOYS DON’T CRY
„Männer weinen nicht. Sollten sie aber […]“
Fasziniert vom Autor Jack Urwin und seinem Buch BOYS DON’T CRY wo Identität, Gefühl und Männlichkeit thematisiert werden, diente dieses Thema als Inspiration für Sarah Schleichs neueste Werkserie. Warum werden Menschen noch immer an Stereotypen gemessen? Die Gesellschaft muss aufhören den Gendern willkürlich Werte zuzuschreiben und Gender ganz neu denken.
Für die Ausstellung „What the flag“ hat die Künstlerin sich spezifisch mit der urbanen Infrastruktur ihres Ausstellungsortes, der sich neben dem luca Gebäude in Luxemburg-Clausen befindet, auseinander gesetzt. Ganz in ihrem Stil hat die Künsterlin eine aus Kupferrohre aufbauende Installation geschaffen, welche die architektonische Struktur der sich dort befindenden Stadtmauern wiedergibt in Kollaboration mit dem Architekturbüro STUDIO FRENZ.

Luxembourg-based organisation LAGERKULTUR pursues the mission to set up experimental performance and exhibition spaces by interconnecting electronic music and visual arts. Throughout an interdisciplinary 4-year practice the emerging collective managed to build a considerable network of local and international artists and carried out notable collaborations with cultural institutions, such as Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Casino Luxembourg - Forum d'art contemporain or Rotondes Luxembourg.
Safe Space Federation (2023) is a mentally driven campaign inviting individuals to build moments of peaceful excitement. It consists of a series of three installations, designed as abstractly defined spaces, where bypassers are given the opportunity to dive into a brief experience of safe space through suggestive visuals and ambient music. Each location (Schluechthaus, LUCA and Avenue de la Liberté) is built around three elements: a flag with a transformed image of one of Lagerkultur’s own souvenir doubled with a transparent sheet pushing people to project themselves, a marked area taking over the installation’s context and finally an ambient mixtape specifically curated by Richard Heinemann.
Through this fictive activist movement, the project aims at questioning the meaning of banner propaganda and relocating people in their individually defined safe space.
