Space, Scale, Stage

2001 proposes to understand architecture as one of the foundations of our species: a medium through which myths, visions, narratives, and plans are communicated and shared (cf. Yuval Noah Harari, Sapiens).

Stripped of its bureaucratic day-to-day obligations, of the burden of program and inherent regulations, architecture can be reclaimed as an act of shaping space and place, and as a speculative construction of narratives capable of drawing communities toward such spaces. This approach takes the form of a naïve trial-and-error, think-and-do workshop.

Guided by a curated collection of references and a variety of materials, participants will imagine a single, non-programmed space in the form of an architectural scale model. They will explore and sketch ideas intuitively, experimenting with materials and tools. Through photography, these models become windows into the imagination, and, accompanied by short texts written by the participants, the resulting images form a shared body of work that supports an open, collective narrative.
