Kashef Chowdhury co-founded the Dhaka based firm URBANA in 1995, leading the practice as its sole Principal since 2004. Chowdhury selects his clients and commissions carefully and invests in each work sufficient time and research to arrive at a contextually and socially responsible and appropriate architectural and planning response.

Projects in the studio vary in size and scale and many have been designed pro bono. Kashef Chowdhury / URBANA’s built works span various typologies, from institutions and public buildings, to culture, education, sports, healthcare, industry, religious, residential and climate-action projects.

URBANA received first prize and commission through the national competition for the Independence Monument and Museum of Bangladesh in 1997. Kashef Chowdhury has received the AR+D first prize from the Architectural Review in London in 2012; the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2016 and the Royal Institute of British Architects RIBA International Prize in 2021.

This lecture has been organised within the framework of the exhibition FARAWAY SO CLOSE, in collaboration with Friendship Luxembourg asbl.
