Verena von Beckerath (Heide & von Beckerath, Berlin)
In a contribution to the year-long study 'Catching Up with Life' at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montréal, Giovanna Borasi (director of the CAA) discussed the possibility that soon we could find ourselves in outdated spaces, shaped by societal values that no longer represent a shared vision of who we are.
By showcasing specific developments in Berlin and beyond, Verena von Beckerath will discuss this simple and equally impressive consideration based on the examination of increasing social and spatial inequality, which harbours several topics and connections relating to housing and architecture.

LUCA, with the support of the Ministry of Housing and Spatial Planning, is organising a series of four lectures called 'Aborder le logement' ('Approaching housing') that will show how architects, through their work and commitment, can contribute to producing quality affordable housing, even in restrictive economic and regulatory contexts.
The series will feature leading architectural figures from the three border countries and Luxembourg. The aim is to provide an overview of architectural production in the three countries and to compare it with the local context.

Heide & von Beckerath is based in Berlin. Tim Heide and Verena von Beckerath are concerned with space as a challenge for projects in different fields and scales. The design process leads to ongoing research involving architecture and society, sustainability and technology. Applying both conceptual and rational thinking, the projects are informed by structural and formal clarity. Their range of work covers urban design, architectural projects, interior design and conceptual studies. In treating every project in its formal, cultural and intellectual dimensions as a whole, the studio collaborates with other architects and specialists where appropriate. Their work (from 1996 to 2008 in partnership with Andrew Alberts) is widely and internationally exhibited and published and has received numerous prestigious awards.
